The developers of "Suicide Squad" say that despite being a live service game, they respect players' time.

The Internet already feels settled about "Suicide Squad: Go Justice League!" is released on February 2, it is hard to imagine what kind of fair response we will get, and it feels as if the Internet has already settled on its opinion of "Suicide Squad: Take down the Justice League! I feel as if the evaluation of the game has already been decided. It has become the epitome of everything that is wrong with live-service type games, and it is not hard to imagine that Rocksteady is eager to get ahead of that reputation.

One way to do so is through a Q&A on the official Discord server, where developers answer questions about battle passes, season content, endgames, multiplayer, and more. The answers were quite promising. For starters, the Battle Pass does not affect the game, only distributes cosmetics and premium currency, and does not banish you to the Phantom Zone when the season ends.

As studio director Darius Sadeghyan puts it, "After the season ends, you can still go back and play your previous Battle Pass. We believe our team has created the best cosmetic items ever. You can also replay the two "episodes" that are added to each season, and Sadeghian says, "New gear (including an Infamy set themed around iconic DC villains), new missions, and new boss battles for the low price of (you guessed it) free!" He explains.

On the topic of how much of Suicide Squad will be playable solo, the answer is apparently all of it. Game Director Axel Rideby added, "If the fourth player in a four-man squad is unable to participate because he has a life outside of the game, it doesn't stop the rest of the players from playing if they choose to continue playing."

Rideby added, "We all love playing the game, but we also have lives [of sorts]. We don't want this to be a game where you have to gamble your life away, where you have to sacrifice a lot to see all the content offered, or where you feel like you're not making good progress in the game if you can't play for hundreds of hours. We want this game to be generous with your time and with all the features we offer."

One of the frustrations of live-service games is that even if you pay for the premium version, they gate what you want behind the higher levels of the season pass and take it away the next season. I was relieved to hear that "Suicide Squad" doesn't do that, and I'm not forced to play with friends, even though I mostly play the game to get away from people.

However, this answer does not reassure me about another problem with "Suicide Squad": it is a loot shooter. Rocksteady's Arkham game is designed around making you do what Batman would do, and so much so that "it makes me feel like Batman" has become a cliché. In contrast, "Suicide Squad" seems to bend the characters to fit the existing genre, giving all the actors guns and means of transportation.

"Suicide Squad" opens in theaters on February 2.
