The Witcher Animated Film Comes to Netflix

Netflix's "The Witcher" is a big production, perhaps the biggest season 1 series ever. But that's not all: according to a Writers Guild of America West listing discovered by the Witcher fan site Redanian Intelligence, Netflix is also producing an independent animated film called The Witcher It appears to be: Nightmare of the Wolf".

Shortly after this WGA listing was discovered, Netflix confirmed the existence of an "animated film" by the creators of the live-action show and the studio that animated "Legend of Korra" Beau DeMayo wrote the "Betrayer Moon" episode ("It's a great episode, with strong horror elements, wonderfully gruesome monster designs, and a seething tension throughout," we said in our review), and showrunner Hissrich's presence should be reassuring. [Korea-based Studio Mill may be best known for Nickelodeon's animated "Legend of Korra: Legendary Defender," "Lego Elf," and "The Secret of Elvendale": most recently, Netflix's "Voltron: Legend Defender," "Lego Elves: Secrets of Elvendale," and "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeats."

As Netflix stated in a tweet, "Bring us back to new threats" is an odd expression. However, this may simply reflect the time-hopping nature of the first season of the live-action show, which is easy to follow on Netflix's timeline map.

No word yet on when Nightmare of the Wolf will be released or if Henry Cavill or the rest of the series cast will appear. I hope so: I had my doubts that Cavill could really portray Geralt's rugged character, but he really delivers, including in the voice acting department, where he drew inspiration from The Witcher game voice actor Doug Cockle. Even if the animation is released while the Witcher series is still active, it would not feel right to have a different voice for Geralt. (Unless they could cast Cockle himself. Do Mission Impossible again.)
